LGBTQ+ people of faith often experience emotional and spiritual injury in churches that condemn their capacity to love and seek love. Because they’ve learned that “All Are Welcome” usually doesn’t apply to them, they can’t assume that any church will be safe for them and their families. On Easter morning in 2018 (April 1), First United Church of Christ officially became an Open and Affirming (ONA) congregation. Our hope is that all LGBTQ+ faith seekers see and know that they have a home here at First UCC because we are all beloved children of God.
By adopting an ONA covenant, as stated above, we at First United Church of Christ take seriously St. Paul’s admonition to “accept one another, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God.” (Romans 15:7, NIV)
As an ONA congregation, we are part of the larger Open and Affirming Coalition of the United Church of Christ. This organization advocates for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, and equips UCC congregations to become effective witnesses to Christ’s extravagant welcome.
Our campus is entirely wheelchair and walker accessible, from handicap parking spaces and a porte-cochère for easy drop offs, to all interior rooms of the church and the upper levels of our meditation garden. We offer personal sound amplifiers and use ADA compliant font sizes on our bulletins and projected PowerPoint. If you have additional questions regarding our ADA compliance, please reach out!
Although there are designated male and female restrooms, we offer single-use restrooms for any and all genders. There are two located on the main floor: inside the Parlor (near main entrance of church) as well as inside the Whole Health Ministries room (across from Fellowship Hall). Just look for the inclusive restroom sign!
Since 2020, our online presence has grown. Everyone is welcome into our sanctuary on Sunday mornings but for those unable to attend in person, we gladly livestream the service via Facebook Live. The placement of the iPad allows those at home to have a front-row seat to Pastor Dan, the PowerPoint, and musical performances. Click the link above to view previous services!
The United Church of Christ (UCC) is a distinct and diverse community of Christians that come together as one church to join faith and action. With over 5,000 churches and nearly one million members across the U.S., the UCC serves God in the co-creation of a just and sustainable world. The UCC is a church of firsts, a church of extravagant welcome, and a church where “…they may all be one” (John 17:21).
Since 1957, the United Church of Christ has been the church of firsts, weaving God’s message of hope and extravagant welcome with action for justice and peace. Together, we live out our faith in ways that effect change in our communities. The UCC’s many “firsts” mean that we have inherited a tradition of acting upon the demands of our faith. When we read in Galatians: “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus”—a demand is made upon us. And so we were the first historically white denomination to ordain an African American, the first to ordain a woman, the first to ordain an openly gay man, and the first Christian church to affirm the right of same-gender couples to marry. We were in the forefront of the anti-slavery movement and the Civil Rights movement. Our response to the demands of our faith is woven into the history of our country.
Today, we continue to change lives throughout the world. We work alongside more than 200 mission partners. We labor ceaselessly to fight injustice, in the United States and abroad. We instill our vision into our youth and young adults, forging leaders who will imagine new dreams. And we sustain and develop church leaders, pastors, and our local churches to live their faith in exciting new ways. We believe in a God that is still speaking, a God that is all-loving and inclusive. We are a church that welcomes and accepts everyone as they are, where your mind is nourished as much as your soul. We are a church where Jesus the healer meets Jesus the revolutionary, and where together, we grow a just and peaceful world.
We are more than happy to meet with you, no matter your question. Pastor Dan and our Director of Music, Media, and Faith Formation, Jimmy, love getting to know folks over a warm cup of coffee. Come visit us during office hours or send us an email to schedule a time to chat!
